Description

Queensland, Australia is known as the Sunshine State, home to the Outback and Aboriginal communities, lush tropical rainforest, golden beaches, uniquely Australian marsupials, and the marine diversity of the magnificent and stunning Great Barrier Reef. The weather in tropical Queensland in May is near perfect, with sunshine and daily temperatures of 75-85°F.l

We begin the program with a week or so in the modern, sophisticated city of Brisbane, taking classes and local field trips with UGA faculty and Australian experts. We then head out of town for extended travel on field trips: we fly to an isolated island on the Great Barrier Reef, visit with unique wildlife at Lamington National Park, and explore the outback at Carnarvon Gorge. One of the unique features of the program is the activities we have along the way: Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, experiencing Aboriginal bush life, hiking tropical rainforests, and meeting koalas and kangaroos, all of which are included in the cost of the program.

The program is suitable for students from a wide variety of backgrounds, and no prior resource conservation knowledge is assumed. In previous years, students from institutions across Georgia and elsewhere (and from diverse departments including Journalism, Business, Communications, Management, History, Latin, and Animal Science as well as Forestry and Anthropology) have participated and succeeded in the program.
